Billionaire’s mega-yacht destroys 13,800 sq/ft of coral reef

The Department of Environment said the anchor and chain of Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen’s mega-yacht Tatoosh caused close to 14,000 square feet of damage to a coral reef in the West Bay replenishment zone.

Findings will be completed sometime this week, but the DOE says its preliminary investigation finds 80% of the coral in that area is destroyed.

To put that in perspective, that’s roughly twice as much damage than was incurred during the grounding of the Maasdam in 1996.

The 300-foot mega-yacht’s 13,800 square feet of destruction is comparable in scope to the Carnival Magic incident of 2014.

Initial reports placed the damage from the Carnival Magic at around 12,000 square feet, though that figure was later revised to 16,000 square feet.

The DOE said those aboard Tatoosh are cooperating with the investigation.
