Baroness Floella Benjamin is the International College of the Cayman Islands’ (ICCI) commencement speaker. Baroness Benjamin was born in Trinidad, and moved to England at the age of 10. She built a 45 year career in show business, and become a household name in the UK through the programme Playschool. She is the author of over 30 books. For the past 10 years she has been the Chancellor of the University of Exeter, making her the first black woman university Chancellor in the UK. She was elevated to the House of Lords as a life peer in 2010. In Parliament she leads on children’s issues, education, media and diversity.
Much of the student body at ICCI, is working mothers, for those students the Baroness says it’s important to “show the child you are a role model.” She encourages the students to “make something of your live, and show the world who you are.”.
This evening’s (Thursday 4 February) commencement ceremony will honor 40 graduate. Of those students, 7 are graduating with their Masters, 22 are graduating with their Bachelors and 7 are graduating with their Associates degree.
