The Cayman 27 documentary LA 2015: Special Olympics California Adventure received a nod at the Poinciana Festival.
In July of 2015 a three-member team, comprised of Kevin Morales, Vanessa Hansen and Anita Smith, made their way to Los Angles to chronicle Special Olympics Cayman Islands’ (SOCI) participate in the World Games. It was a big year for SOCI, with it being the largest delegation to participate in the World Games, and the first time team sports were represented. Athletes brought home medals and made personal bests.
When looking back on the experience Ms. Hansen says “we’re just the storytellers, it was the athletes that made the experience memorable…we won’t have anything if it wasn’t for them.” The Poinciana screening of the documentary was the first time Ms. Smith was able to see the documentary in its entirety, not under the the view point of an editor. The team says it was nice to see each person’s production efforts ‘come together’ into one story.
When asked how they feel about being awarded, the consensus is simple, surprised. Mr. Morales says it was a last minute entry, “Badir Awe [the festival creator] said he saw it and enjoyed it, and recommended screening it.”
Ultimately the production is happy that the story of the athletes is reaching a wider audience, and bringing more awareness to Special Olympics.
