CIFA’s Blake disappointed in Watson

Acting Cayman Islands Football Association President Bruce Blake says he’s disappointed in former CIFA Treasurer Canover Watson, who last week was sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud.

At his trial, Watson testified how former CIFA President Jeffrey Webb pocketed grant money earmarked for CIFA.

While Blake voiced his anger toward both gentlemen, he said he’s focusing now on examining audits Watson was charged with working on and recouping any money that was taken from CIFA.

“My main concern from a CIFA perspective was that there was indication that funds may have been diverted from CIFA,” Blake said. “We take that very seriously and we’re looking into all of our previous transactions — not just this particular transaction — but going back several years and do a complete review.”

Blake said a team from FIFA — which gave the grant money in question at Watson’s trial — will be arriving to help pour through years of financial statements.

“And if there were (funds taken),” Blake said, “taking steps to get those funds back.”
