Hard Assets: $460K gold bar in Cayman

The Cayman Alternative Investment Summit features a great deal of talk about hedge funds and other new, complex financial instruments; but plenty of investors like to diversify their portfolios with more traditional, earthy elements. Gold and silver, for example.

SWP Cayman has a booth at the conference that features a gold bar that weighs 28 pounds and is worth approximately $460,000 (US). The company provides a secure storage site for customers who want to be able to visit their hard assets, especially when their paper investments feel much less solid.

“We’re seeing more people show interest in precious metals as an alternative investment,” said SWP’s Mark Yaxley, “It’s an excellent hedge, a time tested hedge against the underperformance of other markets. So over the last couple of weeks, we’ve see a nice run in the metals.”
