Minister files bankruptcy petition against election challenger

Attorneys for Cabinet Minister Hon. Tara Rivers have filed a bankruptcy petition against one-time election candidate Velma Powery-Hewitt and her husband John Gordon Hewitt for failing to pay nearly $140,000 in costs.

In 2013, Mr. Hewitt challenged Ms. Rivers’ election as she held a US passport and there was a question about the amount of time she had spent overseas. Ms. Rivers won the court battle and is now Minister for Education, Employment and Gender Affairs.

Last year, Chief Justice Hon. Anthony Smellie ruled the Hewitts were responsible for Ms. Rivers’ defence costs. Mrs. Hewitt told Cayman 27, she cannot comment as the matter is before the courts.
