Monyque Brooks is the new Miss Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands has a new queen. Monyque Brooks was crowned Miss Cayman Islands Saturday (30 January) night. The 24 year old beauty, from West Bay, bested seven other contestants to win the crown and title. Though a few days of passed Miss Brooks says it’s still surreal, but ultimately is grateful. “I understand it is an honor and a responsibility and I’m ready to take it on” she says.

Miss Brooks shone brightly on the stage throughout the night, and the answer to he final question impressed many. The question asked to all the contestants was “A woman awakes after 20 years, what do you tell her she has missed?”.

Her response was “I would tell her that she has missed out on advancements in technology, such as the invention of smartphones and MRIs. I would also tell her, she has missed out on historical moments locally, such as when Ms. Sybil McLaughlin was recognized as the first female national hero of the Cayman Islands. However I would also inform her that she has been lucky to miss out on horrible acts of terrorism, such as 911. But after I’ve told her what she has missed I would encourage her to help shape the next 20 years.”

Derri Dacres says the question was ‘non-traditional’. They wanted to see how knowledgeable the ladies were in history and current affairs. “That questions could have been posed a number of ways, it was just asked in a different way” says Ms. Dacres.

When looking ahead to her reign, Miss Brooks has a desired to tap into her creative background. She would like to work with the Crisis Centre, the Miss Cayman platform, to create a programme that will assists children from families of domestic abuse, through performing arts.

Also in her vision is the Miss Universe pageant. Her training begins today (1 February) as she starts work with Anastasia Pierre, a former beauty queen, pageant coach, and celebrity judge at this year’s pageant.

Miss Brooks says she’s excited for what’s to come.
