Disgraced accountant Canover Watson has been stripped of his Young Caymanian Leadership Award.
In accepting the award in 2007, Watson said life was about choices and he challenged Cayman’s youth to believe in themselves.
But last week, he was jailed for seven years, after a jury found him guilty of fraud.
On Thursday (11 February) the YCLA board said it was these actions, that forced it to remove his title.
“This conviction, he was no longer compatible with the ideas we try to uphold,” said YCLA Chairman, Roy McTaggart.
“We would no longer hold him up as someone out young people could look up too, as a model. Im very much disappointed.
“He was one of us, a fellow accountant. Anytime you see those sorts of things happen, yes it does, it carries a level of disappointment.”
Mr. McTaggart added that as there is no second place in the awards, the 2007 winner will forever remain blank.
