Animals that have been neglected, forgotten or abused lose their sense of trust and loyalty.
It leads to bad behavior and that leaves them stuck in shelters because they can’t socialize in the outside world.
But some helpful people work to change that.
With the humane society being understaffed and relying heavily on volunteers, social and service groups such as rotaract can bring in dedicated teams of volunteers to socialize with the dogs by giving them a little time to exercise and play.
“The dogs do not get walked during the week, they only get walked on the weekends, we have a handful of volunteers on the weekend that are regulars , so we do need extra people and its great when we have groups like this , come on a sunday and we finish by 10 o’ clock” said Saskia Salden, Operations Manager
“When we come in now, we bring a big group , all the dogs get walked in less than an hour and it really helps because then there are volunteers who work for the humane society who can concentrate on other stuff , such as the maintenance, such as bathing the dogs or taking care of the dogs, or whatever they got to do, instead of having to each take turns walking dogs while someone is inside working , so it’s just that little bit of help that we give” said Pierre Connolly, Vice President of Rotaract
Humane society dog walks happen every weekend.
