Cayman joins regional tsunami drill

Cayman Emergency Management officials were part of a regional tsunami response drill on Thursday (17 March) designed to test response times for broadcasting information that can keep people safe in the event of a real wave.

Intergovernmental, United States and United Nations groups all participated in the exercise which tested two scenarios: an earthquake off the coast of Venezuela and an 8.7 quake north of Hispaniola.

The Emergency Management Office sent a test message to media at 10:55am with a simulated warning for a three-foot tsunami estimated to arrive in the Cayman Islands 20 to 35 minutes later.
