The words heart surgery tends to cause fear for most people, but surgeon Dr. John Victor Conte of John Hopkins says it shouldn’t cause that much anxiety. “By the time you come to a heart surgeon you have an identifiable problem that can be fixed” he says.
Technology has allowed surgery to be less invasive than in the past. This results in less time spent at the hospital and shorter recovery time. Conditions treated by surgery include issues with heart valves and blood vessels. Dr. Conte says for most patients their outlook is better than it was before they had the surgery.
