Communication is key to any relationship. Counsellor Terry Delaney says we send messages on a daily basis, and it’s important that we learn to send them effectively. He says it’s important to be careful with your word choice. It’s not just what we say that has an impact on how our message is received, so too is our body language. Maintaining eye contact is important, “when we look away it signals that this conversation isn’t important” says Mr. Delaney.
When you says something is also important. Mr. Delaney gives the example of two neighbors. He says if you a topic to discuss with your neighbor, that could cause some conflict, going to them while they are rushing to head to work isn’t the right time to bring up that conversation.
Not saying something can also send a message. Mr. Delaney notes that silence shouldn’t be used as punishment. It can however be effective if it’s being used to give a person time to absorb the message that has been shared.
Mr. Delaney’s final piece of advice, think about what how you communicate before you start to share your message.
