Jade Pitcairn and Gyles Luke each came back from 2-1 deficits to win their respective Under-19 finals over the weekend at the EFG Bank National Junior Squash Championships.
Pitcairn fell behind Mischa Kluver 2-1 over the first three games of their final before edging her in the fourth and winning the fifth game for the 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6 finals victory.
“It feels great because Mischa beat me last year so it was good to get some revenge,” the new Cayman Islands women’s under-19 champion said.
On the boys side, Luke trailed Christian Dube 2-1 as well, but he easily won the fourth game to force a fifth and decisive game. There, he edged Dube 11-9 to claim the men’s under-19 title, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9.
“It feels amazing,” Luke said. “I’ve been working so hard just to do this. It’s killing me right now but it’s just a great feeling.”
Cayman Islands National Squash Team Coach Mark Chaloner spoke to Cayman 27 about the importance of the tournament.
“It’s good to give the kids the opportunity to learn something and develop their skills,” Chaloner said. “Not just their skills in the sport but teach them about their own personal skills, too. I saw in some of the matches some really good determination, concentration and a huge amount of effort from the kids.”
