Parenting Plus: Gender equality for young girls

As Honouring Women’s Month comes to a close the Family Resource Centre is putting a highlight on the need for gender equality for young girls. Miriam Foster of the Family Resource Centre says young girls have to push through of barriers. Much focus is put on exterior looks, from skin colour to hair texture. Mrs. Foster says we need to teach girls that women comes in all shapes and sizes and each have their own beauty. She goes on to stress the importance of focusing on inner beauty.

Charmaine Miller of the Family Resource Centre says it’s never too early to start these lessons. She says children absorb information quickly and it has an affect on how they see themselves and their own potential. Mrs. Millers says to use every opportunity to teach a lesson, and to use media to your advantage. She also reminds mothers that they are a role model for their daughters; what a mother does a daughter sees and will put into action.
