Scholars International is off for Montego Bay, Jamaica, to take on some of the best football teams in the region.
Scholars this week kicks off in the 2016 Caribbean Football Union Club Championships. The team left Monday (7 March) morning.
Cayman will play two teams in Group 3 of the competition — host Montego Bay United and defending tournament champion Central FC.
Appearing on the 2 March episode of Let’s Talk Sports, Scholars’ Mark Beckford said his team will be considered an underdog but plans to stick with what has made them a perennial CIFA Premier League power.
“We’re an amateur league,” Beckford said. “We just don’t have the time to dedicate full-time to football. I’m a volunteer. Our players are volunteer. Other countries, they’re professionals. That’s what they do what they do for a living. It’s like mixing apples and oranges, actually.”
That said, Beckford says the team isn’t going in expecting to lose.
“We know our limitations,” he said. “So therefore we plan to do just do what we do best. I mean, always remember this — David and Goliath.”
Scholars kicks off 9 March versus Montego Bay before taking on United FC on 11 March. The group winner moves on to the next round of the tournament.
