Speed changes now in effect

New speed limits came into effect today March 7, 2016. A total of 9 zones, spanning from East End to West Bay, have seen varying changes, some more severe than others.

The changes were first proposed back in 2011, following several fatal car accidents. The change in the speed limits appeared to be abrupt, with the public receiving less than 2 weeks notice from the start date. Marion Pandohie of the Transportation Planner of the National Roads Authority tell us, even though there was relativity little warning of the then impending change, the public knew it was bound to happen.

“Two weeks, I will say is probably not enough time; but I will say, that it has been out there for a good stretch of time. So people knew it was coming it was just exactly when, was the question,” said Mrs. Pandohie.

She warns they have done all they can, but now the onus is on drivers to educate themselves on the changes and to follow the speed limits.
