West Indies stay unbeaten in the ICC World Twenty20 Championship after a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Group 2 play.
While it was Chris Gayle’s offensive fireworks that led to the first win, it was the Caribbean side’s bowling and fielding that carried much of the weight in game two.
Samuel Badree took three wickets for 12 runs and Dwayne Bravo took two for 20 and limited the defending tournament champions tp 122 runs.
The Windies fared well in the chase. Opener Andre Fletcher’s unbeaten 84 led the way and the West Indies won it with 10 balls remaining.
“We have great team spirit,” Fletcher said. “And as I said, we’re uniting as one. We know we just have to continue that momentum. Try not to get too complacent. We always try to play each game as a final so we will always go out there and play as hard as possible. And once we could win all four, it would be good for us.”
The Windies finish group play with South Africa on Friday 25 March and Afghanistan on Sunday 27 March. A win in either of those games will clinch a berth in the next round.
