Youth parliamentarians bring debate to the LA floor

It’s been three months since the Legislative Assembly was last in session, but Monday (14 March) Cayman’s youth parliamentarians stepped in to fill the void.

Students took over the LA as part of the commonwealth day festivities.

The gallery was packed to the rafters as the young lawmakers took their seats and debated hot-button issues like abortion and the country’s transportation infrastructure plan.

For students, it was an up-close look at the mechanics of government.

“Even though we might not be interested in parliament itself, we live in the Caymanian community, so it’s a good idea to learn about issues that affect you directly, so it’s definitely a good experience for all the students here today,” said Chauntol Hylton, John Gray High School head girl.

Ms. Hylton told Cayman 27 she had no political aspirations before today’s youth parliament session, but says she may reconsider that.

No date has been set for the return of the actual LA.
