The Cayman Islands Football Association will determine punishment for two players after a referee was assaulted. The incident occurred on 17 April during a match between Bodden Town FC and Academy at Ed Bush Field.
Police say a 911 call was received after a 38-year old referee sent off a player who later returned to the pitch and attacked him. Then another player who was also sent off joined in the assault. The referee attended the Cayman Islands Hospital and was treated for non life-threatening injuries and later released.
CIFA’s disciplinary committee is expected to meet this week to determine the punishment for those players. Its Competitions Committee will also meet to determine the outcome of the abandoned game.
This is not the first time referees have been targeted during games; last month CIFA issued a warning to clubs about the poor treatment of match officials.
