Jenkins’ buzzer-beater lifts Villanova to NCAA title

Kris Jenkins hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Villanova Wildcats to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship with a thrilling 77-74 win over North Carolina.

“We’re just trying to be legendary,” Jenkins said afterward.

Legendary it was.

The Wildcats upset the top-seeded Tar Heels after trailing by five at the half.

Villanova led by three with less than 10 seconds to go but North Carolina’s Marcus Paige nailed a double-clutch three-point basket to tie it at 74-74 with 4.7 seconds remaining.

The Tar Heels put on a full-court press but the Wildcats were able to get the ball down near the top of the key and Jenkins took his shot in stride as the buzzer sounded.

It’s the first NCAA title game to be decided on a buzzer-beating shot since 1983.
