Mixed bag for Cayman on opening day of NORCECA

It was a day of ups and downs for the three local teams competing in the Cayman Islands stop of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball tour.

The tournament runs 22-24 April at Public Beach.

Day one saw Cayman’s women’s team of Stefania Gandolfi and Jessica Wolfenden go undefeated in Pool D play. The pair debuted by beating Jamaica 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) before topping Honduras 2-0 (21-17, 21-11). The two return to action at 10 a.m. on 23 April versus Nicaragua.

Cayman’s other women’s team of Marissa Harrison and Chante Smith-Johnson went 0-2 overall on day one, falling to Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 (21-13, 21-17) and Costa Rica 2-0 (21-8, 21-3).

Cayman’s lone men’s team of Olney Thompson and Philippe Deslandes also went winless. The men fell to Curacao 2-0 (20-22, 21-17) before losing to Canada 2-0 (21-11, 21-7).

The play on 23 April begins at 9 a.m. and features the final round of group play before the quarterfinals begin.
