More resources needed for prisons

$1 million more is the price tag the Prisons Director has given for inmates to get the proper rehabilitation they need to renter society.

The budget for prisons services hovers around $10 million a year but Neil Lavis says it simply is not enough to make sure the more than 200 inmates currently housed there get the help they need.

“We do have some interventions that are delivered but I don’t think we do enough, things like sex offender treatment is definitely needed. The Parole board would be taking a risk if they are releasing untreated people,” said Mr. Lavis.

The Prisons Director appeared on this week’s The Panel.
