Caymanian Amanda Nelson has signed on to play football for Limestone College, an NCAA Division II programme in Gaffney, S.C.
On signing day, head coach Matt Smith sung her praises.
“She spent the last two years playing at South Georgia State junior college,” Smith said in a video produced by the school’s media relations department. “Amanda plays centre back primarily and she actually plays as the starting centre back for the Cayman Islands national team, which has competed in World Cup qualifiers and everything like that. Real excited to bring her experience and athleticism. Very athletic kid. Somebody who’s gonna give us some depth and really competition at the centre back spot. Somebody who I think could really step in and make a difference.”
Nelson is believed to be the only Caymanian player playing at the NCAA Division II level next season. That’s the second-highest level of collegiate football in the United States.
