Government has given the “thumbs up” for work to begin on creating an Ombudsman’s office in Cayman. To do this the Complaints Commissioner’s office and the Freedom of Information office will be joined.
The new office will handle complaints against the police as well as Government agencies. Peter Gough, from the Deputy Governor’s office has been named Project Director, he says the 2009 constitution called for such an office to be created.
During an interview with Cayman 27 Mr Gough said, “It calls for an office to report to a parliamentary sub-committee and as I said, it’s completely independent of the executive arm of the government. It’s an extremely important office of the government, it’s there to ensure that citizens are not exposed to the improper use of power by the arm of the government.”
