CYDEC Conference 2019

Sports Ministry would consider field events coach

Sports Minister Hon. Osbourne Bodden says his Ministry would consider hiring a full-time athletics coach to focus solely on the field events.

Speaking at last week’s press conference to laud CARIFTA medalists, Bodden was asked if Government would support such a hire, considering the success — and potential — Caymanian athletes have in the field events.

“My job is to provide whatever resources we can within reason,” Bodden said. “And if a sports psychologist, a speed coach, whatever it is that helps these athletes — and we can find it within our resources – we will.”

Three of Cayman’s sevens medals at the 2016 CARIFTA Track and Field Championships came from field events. Both of  Cayman’s field events medalists this year — Lacee Barnes and Daneliz Thomas — have gone to Jamaica in year’s past to receive training.

Over the past four years, six out of Cayman’s 12 medals at CARIFTA have come in field events.
