One of Cayman’s top track and field athletes says she’s getting interest from NCAA Division I programmes in the United States.
Lacee Barnes — fresh off a gold-medal winning performance in the shot put and silver in the discus at the recent CARIFTA Track and Field Championships — says college recruiters are reaching out.
“I actually spoke to the (University of) Albany coach, in Albany, New York,” Barnes said on the 13 April episode of Let’s Talk Sports. “He spoke to me at CARIFTA. And Michigan State University actually called my parents a couple days after saying they’re interested in my coming.”
NCAA Division I is the highest level of collegiate sports in the US.
Currently three Caymanians compete at that level — University of Akron jumper Ashleigh Nalty, Clemson University middle distance runner Jorel Bellafonte and University of Missouri thrower Alex Pascal.
