Kirkconnell: Big sports week benefits Cayman’s tourism

This week arguably is one of the biggest in Cayman Islands sporting history.

Youth teams from some of the world’s most prominent football clubs — including Manchester City — are on island for the Cayman Airways Youth Football Cup. The country also hosts track and field’s preeminent superstar — Usain Bolt — here for the Cayman Invitational.

Tourism Minister Hon. Moses Kirkconnell says it shows Cayman can punch above its weight as a tourism and sports tourism destination.

“If you are looking through the morning news any place in the world and you see the names that are in Cayman this week for the Invitational track meet and you see Manchester City is in Cayman playing football, it makes you want to come to Cayman,” Kirkconnell said. “It puts us in a strategic position that we continue to build our brand and we continue to attract the type of people that we offer Cayman kind to and we build repeat visitors.”
