Man pinned by van dies

A man died after he was pinned between his work van and a palm tree. The accident happened along Valencia Drive on Monday (May 03). 70 year old Louis Rhoden has been identified as the victim, he was in his yard when it happened.

Police said yesterday afternoon while Mr Rhoden was working on his van, the vehicle managed to shift into gear and trapped him between the tree and the vehicle. No one was in the van during the accident. Neighbours soon saw what had happened and rushed over. They called 911, and were instructed on how to assist him until emergency services personnel arrived.

Mr. Rhoden was rushed to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 pm.

During an interview with Cayman 27 Doreen Rhoden, the victim’s wife, expressed heartbreak and sadness at the loss of her partner of over 35 years.

She told Cayman 27, “Louis was my heartbeat. We had just celebrated 35 years of marriage. He was an avid fisherman and I thought one day I might have lost him to the sea, but I could never have expected to lose him like this.”

He was a retired civil servant, and had worked for the Public Works Department for 28 years. He is survived by his wife and 6 children.
