Nelson signs on with D-I programme Valparaiso

Caymanian Anton Nelson recently signed on to play with the men’s soccer team at Valparaiso University, in the United States.

The Crusaders are an NCAA Division I programme, the highest level of collegiate sports in the US.

Nelson currently attends the Under-18 academy for Shrewsbury Town FC, in England. In 2014, he represented Cayman at the regional leg of World Cup qualifiers, in Curacao.

“I honestly just want to be an ambassador for the Cayman Islands in Division I sports,” Nelson told Cayman 27 via Skype. “I think there’s a lot of talent there.”

Nelson says he feels there are several advantages to playing in the United States college system versus a pro-style academy system. He’s expected to matriculate to campus this summer.

“I just want to make Cayman really proud of me and proud of Cayman,” he said. “Because I think that with all these recent scandals I feel there has to be some positivity coming out for everyone. And I feel that this is a good step.”
