Every thirty minutes your kidney filters all the blood in your body and removes wasteful by products that could kill you. One kidney specialist says minor changes in your life style could make a big difference for the hardworking organ.
Dr. Nelson Iheonunekwu of the Cayman Islands Hospital says when it comes the health of your kidneys there’s no time to kid around.
He said, “Kidneys clear the blood of unnecessary impurities and they also regulate our blood pressure by regulating the salt in our system in an addition to that, they regulate the amount of water that is needed in our body.”
Each year the US records 26 million cases of some form of kidney disease, Dr. Iheonunekwu says simple things like quitting smoking and drinking can tremendously improve the health of ones kidneys.
He warns kidney failure could spell a grim future. During and interview with Cayman 27 he said, “The person will literally drown in his or her own waste.”
Shelley Mmyles-Guardado has been a dialysis patient for the last four years. She says it was something she never expected.
“I knew for a long time that I was having kidney problems, and one day it just went,” said Ms Myles- Guardado.
One’s age and ethnicity can increase the chances of kidney diseases.
Dr. Nelson warns,”If you are above 50 you need to check on our kidney. If you have a family history of somebody in your family with chronic kidney or hypertension disease you need to be aware. If you are black or if your Hispanic you need to be aware about checking about your kidneys.”
