Millions of views and thousands of shares later, it appears two recent competitions held on these shores helped propel Cayman into the international sporting limelight.
The first of the two videos to spread across the internet featured Usain Bolt fielding a very important question from a young man during a meet-and-greet session in Cayman Brac.
“Usain Bolt, what is one plus two?” the child asked as Bolt and the nearby crowd erupted in laughter.
Bolt was in Cayman Brac ahead of the 2016 Cayman Invitational.
The video’s original post on YouTube now has more than a quarter-million views and that doesn’t count the views the video received after being posted by major media outlets like Yahoo Sports, NBC Sports, Fox Sports and USA Today. It has been shared thousands of times on social media.
“Not only have I seen it, I was there,” Sports Minister Hon. Osbourne Bodden said. “I was right next to them when he did it. And let me tell you, he brought the house down. I watched it on Yahoo Sports and it is absolutely hilarious.”
Mr. Bodden says it fits perfectly with Cayman’s growing sports tourism initiatives.
“So you can imagine where that’s gonna go, it’s huge,” he said. “I think Cayman people need to appreciate how big this is. The eyes of the world are upon us and this is huge publicity. Fantastic. We can’t pay for this.”
Also running last week was the Cayman Airways Youth Football Cup, an invitational under-15 age group tournament.
Fox Sports picked up and published a small story on an outstanding goal scored by a Seattle Sounders player at Ed Bush Stadium, in West Bay.
