Organisers of the upcoming annual “Queering Paradigms” conference told Cayman 27 a late change of venue will not dampen spirits at the LGBT event.
Leonardo Raznovich said the conference had been booked at the Marriott hotel for two months, when the Marriott called to cancel.
He said he was told the hotel was already booked for the weekend.
Mr. Raznovich, who himself is petitioning Immigration to be added to his husband’s work permit as a dependent, said the timing of the cancellation is suspicious.
“If it’s not incompetence, in relation to the management of their own business, it makes you wonder if they were scared of holding the conference with them,” said Mr. Raznovich. “Or they have a new manager and perhaps the new manager has some particular views in relation to LGBT rights and didn’t want to hold the conference there, I don’t know?”
Cayman 27 checked with the Marriott, who disputes Mr. Raznovich’s account. A spokesperson placed the blame for the cancellation on a communication breakdown. Laura Skec told Cayman 27 via telephone the hotel even offered a significant sponsorship of the event.
She said the cancellation had nothing to do with the nature of the conference.
Queering Paradigms takes place June 11th and 12th at the Chamber of Commerce in Governor’s Square.
The event is free and open to the public.
