Miami Marlins star Jose Fernandez, one of the most dominant pitchers in professional baseball, was killed in a boating crash early on Sunday in Florida.
The Cuban was one of three men killed when the 32-foot boat collided with a rocky jetty off of Miami Beach. Cuban baseball fans mourned the death of Fernandez after news broke the pitcher was killed. The Miami Marlins wore number 16 jerseys on Monday night’s game at Marlins Park in honor of Fernandez. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria says it will be the last time any player wears number 16. It is suspected speed caused the fatal accident and investigations are still ongoing.
The two-time all-star was drafted in 2011 and rose to the Marlins’ starting pitching staff by 2013. Fernandez was also named National League Rookie of the year in 2013 and was 38 to 17 with a 2.58 ERA in 76 career starts.
He was 16 to 8 with a 2. 86 ERA this season.
