Cayman’s top cricket coach says changes are coming on the domestic cricket front while there’s a big opportunity knocking abroad.
New Cayman Islands Cricket Technical Director Peter Anderson appeared on the 12 October episode of Let’s Talk Sports.
He says the International Cricket Council has thrown Cayman cricket a lifeline with a chance to quickly move back into Division 5 of the World Cricket League.
“Which is a fantastic opportunity for Cayman cricket to jump on board again,” Anderson said. “From a senior point of view, that’s absolutely fantastic.”
Cayman in 2015 was bounced out of the World Cricket League altogether after finishing seventh in Division 6, a division of play that has since been scrapped by the ICC.
Anderson says other changes are on the horizon closer to home.
“I’ve incorporated the girls playing Division 2 with the men,” he said. “I think it’s going to be an awesome opportunity to lift their standard and give them a challenge. I’m sure a few of the girls have already said to me they reckon they can beat a few of the guys teams.
“We’ve entered a Colts team, which is a big ask of the young guys to play in the first division this year. I’ve really come to the stage that this is what we have to do and we have to do it now.”
No word yet on when the WCL qualifying tournament will be held.
