New recycling equipment expected to arrive by Christmas

The three “R’s” of waste management are reduce, re-use, and recycle. All three promise to factor heavily in the country’s new Integrated Solid Waste Management System.

Right now, the Department of Environmental Health has employees working overtime to sort and bale recyclables to keep up with the workload brought on earlier this year when the DEH took over recycling from the private sector.

Premier Alden McLaughlin said recycling is catching on, even in his own home.

“More and more, because I’ve got young people in my family, ‘no no daddy, you can’t throw that away, that’ s got to be recycled,’ and I think that’s slowly becoming part of the culture,” said Mr. McLaughlin.

More sorting and bailing equipment is expected to arrive on island by Christmas, creating six new jobs.
