Roma opened the 2016/17 Cayman Islands Football Association Premier League season with a statement, upsetting two-time defending champion Scholars 1-0 Sunday (2 October) at Ed Bush Field.
Gawayne Speed scored on a 26th-minute penalty that proved to be the difference.
The penalty was set up from a pair of run-ins between Roma players and Scholars’ keeper Jermaine Brown.
Brown early in the match collided with a Roma player and appeared to extend his forearm, sending the player to the ground.
It was a similar situation when another Roma player charged into the box minutes later and Brown again collided with him while tracking down the ball. This time, however, officials awarded Roma a try from the spot.
Academy came away with a 2-0 win over Sunet thanks to goals from Yolande Plummer and Jonah Ebanks in the final six minutes of play.
Cayman Athletic shutout Latinos, 1-0, with a goal from Clevin Bello Smith.
Bodden Town topped Elite 2-1 thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Andra Allen.
Ricoh Bodden gave Bodden Town a 1-0 lead with a 13th-minute penalty before Raul Rodriguez equalised for Elite.
