Nine to eight.
That’s how legislators voted Thursday night (7 October) bringing an end to veteran MLA Anthony Eden’s motion calling for a same-sex marriage referendum. However the debate sparked some emotive, somber and reasoned contributions as MLAs made out their cases, for and against, the public vote. The debate occupied most of the evening’s session as Mr Eden, bible in hand, beseeched members to preserve Cayman’s Christian values.
Sharing his view was East End MLA Arden McLean, who was quite vociferous in his contribution, objecting to UK Overseas Territories Minister Baroness Anelay’s comments on same-sex discrimination. The debate lasted well past the hour of 6pm.
“I am the only one to be expressing personal opinions in here, not me, members I am talking about. It is not her place,” Mr McLean said.
Finance minister Marco Archer contended everyone already knows where they stand on the issue and there was no need for a referendum.
