Home invasion robbery trial to start

Trial is scheduled to begin Monday (28 November) for a man accused in the home invasion robbery that left a Rum Point man injured earlier this year.

David McLaughlin Martinez, 39, is charged with robbery and grievous bodily harm. The trial will focus on a robbery that occurred early in the evening of 11 January as frequent visitor from Kentucky sat on the back porch of his beach home. The man, 77, told police he was approached by a masked man, punched in the face and knocked unconscious. The victim suffered a broken cheekbone.

According to police, the attacker then entered the home and threatened the man’s wife and their caregiver at knifepoint. He eventually left with several items of jewelry, electronics and cash.

Mr. McLaughlin-Martinez was arrested four days later during the subsequent investigation, and he initially denied any involvement. He later told a detective that he was a lookout for someone else who committed the robbery.
