Police helicopter hit by laser strikes

The RCIPS helicopter Friday (4 November) was struck twice by a high-intensity laser, prompting police to issue a warning against such action.

The incidents occurred while the chopper was deployed in the West Bay area, according to police. It was hit in quick succession by a green laser from the ground.

The crew was unable to pinpoint the location but believe it came from the Finch Dr. area, on the district’s northwest side.

Police say it presents a very real danger to the crew and public as lasers can cause temporary blindness  as well as detract from police operations.

They say anyone suspected of endangering aircraft will be arrested and could face imprisonment.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call police at 949-4222 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line, 800-TIPS.
