The World Health Organization reports that prostate cancer is the most “Common” cancer in Caribbean males, but on Island, the cancer registry would not know.
According to the WHO, prostate cancer has the highest rate of mortality for Caribbean men.
Cayman’s local register is rising in numbers, but seventy percent of those registered are females.
This does not give the register enough information to track the trend of prostate cancer locally.
“Cancer is not a comfortable topic to talk about and prostate cancer in particular is something men don’t often want to share a lot of information about, it’s a private matter, and I think that’s probably the number one reason why we’re not seeing a lot of men come and register,” said Cancer Register’s Amanda Nicholson.
