Stability of reef system in question after Saga grounding causes cave-ins

For underwater photographers, Eden Rock is more than just a place to dive, it’s something like hallowed ground.

International Scuba Diving Hall Of Fame inductee Cathy Church’s images of Eden Rock helped make it one of the island’s most popular dive sites. Ms. Church told Cayman 27 she now she worries the reef structure could be unstable after an impact from the 2900 tonne cargo ship Saga.

“With the cracking and the breaking of the coral; that was a huge ship and certainly a large impact. To wonder what is broken loose still, if this were a building they would cordon it off until they knew it was safe to go in, and that would be a real loss,” said Ms. Church.
