Eden Rock sustained 8300 sq/ft of damage from Saga grounding

The Department of Environment told Cayman 27 emergency reef restoration efforts are underway at the site of a container ship grounding last month.

The DOE said the reef restoration efforts have no impact on its ongoing investigation and do not reflect any parties’ liability.

The DOE said more than 8,300 sq/ft were impacted by the incident. About 2/3 of coral was either crushed or heavily impacted, leaving around 2,600 sq/ft of secondary impact.

To put that in perspective, The Carnival Magic’s anchor drop in 2014 damaged around 16,000 sq/ft of coral reef, and in January, Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen’s mega yacht Tatoosh put the hurt on 14,000 sq/ft of coral reef.
