Stakeholders such as the Ministry of Sports and Tourism as well as major sponsors such as Cayman Airways gathered at the Government Administration building Tuesday (29 May) for the official press announcement of the Cayman Islands Invitational Under-15 Youth Football Cup.
Speaking on behalf of Sports Minister Hon. Julianna O’Connor-Connolly, Assistant Chief Officer Joel Francis says government is happy to support the long-standing tournament.
“The Minister is proud to know that this tournament has consistently enjoyed financial support from the government throughout the years, as well as private corporate sponsorship which has allowed it to be the successful tournament that is today.”
Sports Councillor and Deputy Tourism Minister David Wight says Government in firmly behind the event due to its stability.
“Sports Tourism is a rapidly growing sector of the industry. Over the long-term, the prestige of hosting these types of tournaments on our shores helps to build the Cayman Islands as a sports tourism destination.”
Cayman Airways CEO Fabian Whorms, the major sponsor of the event says the name change to the ‘Cayman Islands Invitational’ in 2018 is a reflection of its growth.
“Cayman Airways have been involved in this event since the beginning as the title sponsor. It got to the point where we have two different tournaments with two different age groups, Under-15 and Under-13. I think that Under-15 tournament has built a solid enough foundation that it can continue on without being branded as the Cayman Airways Under-15 Tournament.”
