Newly sworn-in Governor Martyn Keith Roper was warmly welcomed upon his arrival Monday morning (29 October) at the Owen Roberts International Airport.
“We’re all very excited to welcome him to the Cayman Islands and to show him all the good things we are doing in the Cayman Islands,” said Hon. Franz Manderson, Deputy Governor.
Cayman’s 14th Governor arrived on Monday morning on a Cayman Airways flight and was greeted by many dignitaries. Mr. Manderson, the man who acted in the Governor’s post for the last five months said, he’s looking forward to working with Governor Roper.
“He’s been working in various jurisdictions, so I’m sure he’ll have a great experience to share with us as to how we can move to have a world-class civil service,” said Mr. Manderson.
Deputy Governor Manderson served as acting Governor, but now that Governor Roper is here he said it’s back to what he loves best.
“I must tell you that I enjoy my deputy governor role better,” said Mr. Manderson.
House Speaker Hon. McKeeva Bush congratulated Mr. Manderson for the work he did during his time in the post.
“The Honourable Franz Manderson and Ms. Gloria McField-Nixon have held the fort in terms of the Legislative Assembly, they have held the fort in the entire civil service and we considered they did an excellent job in the interim,” said Speaker Bush.
Mr. Bush said he knew a new Governor would be appointed following Governor Anwar Choudhury’s controversial removal, four months after he was sworn in.
“He’s gone and I never did expect him to come back, I had a good relationship while he was here but I don’t know any details. Every time I got in an argument with my mother-in-law, I never got fired for it,” said Mr. Bush.
He said he hopes Mr. Roper will be here for a full term.
“We hope he is going to be permanent for the duration that they usually are,” said Hon. Bush.
Now that Governor Roper is here Mr. Manderson said it’s time for some rest.
“So I’m actually looking forward to some vacation now,” said Mr. Manderson.
