Police Commissioner Derek Byrne says Saturday’s (17 November) hit and run incident involving a police officer was a “disturbing attack.”
The incident happened during a traffic stop on the Esterly Tibbetts Highway in the vicinity of Yacht Drive.
The RCIPS said the policeman had walked in front of the parked sedan to get the license plate number after its occupants did not respond to his questions.
They said the driver then struck the officer before speeding off into West Bay.
Commissioner Byrne told Cayman 27, “Such incidents threaten the relationship between law enforcement and the community, and negatively impact everyone’s safety. The matter is now under investigation and every effort is being made to locate and prosecute the offender.”
The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital on Saturday.
He is currently on leave as a result of the incident.
