Two first half goals was more than enough as El Salvador defeated Cayman 3-1 Sunday (4 November) in the group stage of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championships held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
A penalty kick in the 39th minute by El Salvador’s Jose Portillo, followed by a second goal in the 41st minute by Jorge Cruz put the Central Americans ahead for good. A third goal to open the second half in the 51st minute by Fernando Chavel extended the lead. Cayman’s Kareem Foster provided the lone goal for the Under-20s in the 56th minute.
“Overall, the boys played well and we know that they can play better but I suppose being on the big stage got the better of their nerves” said Head Coach Ernie ‘Gillie’ Seymour. “Hopefully, they can build their confidence and do well in the remaining matches of the tournament.
Cayman will play Guyana Tuesday (6 November) followed by Guatemala Thursday (8 November) with Curacao Saturday (10 November) to round out the group stage. Seymour reiterated the need for his club’s support, as he’s done the entire 2018 leading up to the regional World Cup qualifier.
“If the Cayman Islands want to do well at the international level them more resources need to be put into the youth programmes.”
