20-year old Elijah Seymour has agreed to sign with one of Portugal’s oldest football clubs.
Seymour will join C.F União, also known as ‘União da Madeira’. The club competes in the Campeonato de Portugal, the country’s third division of football. The Academy Sports Club standout says the opportunity arose from father Virgil’s recruitment of a Portuguese coach for the Excel Sports Management football programme.
“My dad had a few words with him about my situation, and he was kind enough to offer a helping hand, and give us the phone number of one of his best friends who happened to be an agent with links with several top clubs in Portugal,” said Seymour. “We got in touch with him, showed him footage of me playing, and he liked what he saw. He set up a trial at União Da Madeira.”
After a four-week October trial, Seymour was offered a one-year contract to play for the club’s senior team.
The ‘Unionistas’ will compete in the ‘Serie B’ division of the 72 team, two-stage season which begins in August 2018. The top two teams from the four-division league advance to the second stage, with the league’s two finalists gaining promotion to Portugal’s second division, LigaPro.
Seymour played for Academy Sports Club until the age 15 after he was scouted by London’s Barnet FC during a tour of England.
After being released by Barnet at age 18, Seymour spent the following year in London playing with Wingate and Finchley; a semi-professional team.
