Pirates join in Barkers Beach clean-up

Plastic Free Cayman teamed up with the Pirates Week Committee over the weekend to host its first volunteer tourist beach clean at Barkers Beach in West Bay.

Around 40 tourists signed up to clean the beach together with some residents.

Founder of Plastic Free Cayman Claire Hughes said the event should be an experience that visitors take and teach.

“So we are here to get the plastic off the beach to stop it from washing back in and to remove it and we are also here to educate. So the beauty of educating some tourists is that they are gonna go back home and then hopefully they would be an influence and spread awareness to others,” Ms. Hughes said.

Plastic Free Cayman is also encouraging members of the public to reuse plastic containers and to stop littering.
