Plastic Free Cayman volunteers removed hundreds of pounds of trash from booby bird nesting beaches on Cayman Brac.
The two-day clean-up took place over the weekend, where 15 volunteers focused their efforts on the Brac’s south coast.
In roughly six hours of work, volunteers collected 772.4 pounds of trash from an 124 foot stretch of Cayman Brac beachfront.
“It is really important at the moment for booby nesting season to remove some of that plastic because, the birds can get entangled or ingest the plastic and it will be fatal for them, so we are really trying to clean up that beach especially because of the booby nesting season coming up,” said Plastic Free Cayman volunteer Linda Clark.
Ms. Clark told Cayman 27 some of Brac’s nesting boobies were seen incorporating pieces of plastic into their nests.
