Cheeseburger moniker tasteless, say friends, family of Bob Soto

When it comes to a reef, what’s in a name?

Friends and family of the late Bob Soto say plenty, when it comes to the reef that bears the diving pioneer’s name.

Bob Soto’s reef also goes by another name – cheeseburger reef – due to its proximity to the waterfront Burger King, but many in the dive community feel that nickname is disrespectful to the father of recreational diving.

“This whole area from here all the way up to pageant peach, that’s all part of Soto’s reef, been that way since I started back in 1968,” said Peter Milburn. “It’s in respect for bobby and all that he did for diving for this country. Without him we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

“I hope it’s Soto’s reef south and sotos north and whatnot because it should be. He named them,” said Suzy Soto.

So is it Soto’s reef or cheeseburger? The debate may rage on, depending who you ask, and how hungry they might be at the time.

According to iDive, it’s referred to as Soto’s reef.
